The Shaw Strings Private Studio has existed in some form or another since May of 2011, when I took on my first violin student as I came home for the summer from college. When August rolled around and it was time for me to go back to school, I passed my student on to my high school teacher, wished him the best and assumed I would buckle down on my studies. Though I didn't realize it at the time, this was the start of my small business and what would become my pride and joy in the years to come.
You see, I transferred to Shepherd University in the fall of 2011 and one of the ways they gave students practical teaching experience was through their Preparatory Division after their applied instructor gave them permission. I shared with my teacher how I'd started my first student that summer, how much I enjoyed it and asked if eventually I would be allowed to teach in the program, too. Graciously, Heather Austin-Stone did sign off on me beginning students and I've been teaching ever since!
Over the years I've gotten to work with hundreds of students, seen them approach challenges in and out of the lesson room and witnessed how they rose above those obstacles! Through our time together, I've done my best to encourage a love of music along with participation and appreciation for the arts in Hagerstown, Maryland and our surrounding areas. I am so proud of the many people I have come in contact with through this adventure.
Looking back, we are seven years in and I couldn't be more thankful and excited for the future! I'm sure the best is yet to come.
